What to Expect from Your First Deep Tissue Massage

Many people have had a massage at least once in their life. It may have been at a professional parlor or one of your friends or partners may have provided a massage in your home. If you have heard of deep tissue massage, you may wonder what it is like. It can sound like an intense experience and, in truth, it is. Deep tissue massage in Lynwood can offer amazing benefits to the body, but there are a few things to know before scheduling an appointment for yourself.

Deep Tissue is What It Sounds Like

Like other massage types, deep tissue massage includes many different techniques to help ease the pain of sore muscles. With a deep tissue massage, the technique uses more pressure in specific areas of the body to reach the deepest layers of muscle. It also typically uses slower strokes than other massages you may have experienced.  The reason for the extra pressure is to break down scar tissue, or adhesions, which can form on the muscles after wear and tear or injury.

It Can Be Uncomfortable

You may be concerned that a deep tissue massage in Lynwood will hurt, but that isn’t entirely accurate. It can hurt, but it typically is more uncomfortable than painful. If you feel pain, you will need to let the therapist know so they can alter the way they provide the massage. However, you will feel a lot of pressure during this massage and there may be twinges of pain in the muscle.

Relaxing is Important

If you go into a deep tissue massage as a ball of human tension, it’s not going to work the way it should. You need to make an effort to relax as much as you can. The person providing the massage will help with this to make the massage as successful as possible. When the massage is complete, stressing the muscles is advised, but you should avoid overworking them. Give yourself time to recuperate.

Hydrate Your Body

Following a massage, you may need to ice areas that are sore to avoid swelling and reduce inflammation. You should also make sure to drink plenty of water, as massage can leave you dehydrated. Sometimes you may find that you are a bit lightheaded following a massage and water can help with that, as well.
