Diamonds can come in almost any color imaginable, but most people think that the only way to go is with traditional white. In most cases, diamonds are valued by their lack of color, and they get the highest grades (D through F) on the laboratory scale for a complete absence of color. However, some of the most valuable diamonds throughout the world are not white. For example, the Hope Diamond is blue and in a museum. A fanciful pink one was auctioned for over $46 million in 2010. Colored diamond rings are becoming more popular thanks to celebrities and fashion magazines, so a colored diamond might be an excellent alternative to traditional white for your loved one.

Understanding Colored Diamonds

Diamonds come in many colors, some bright and beautiful, others pale and ephemeral. You’ll find green, pink, red, blue, brown, black, yellow and many others. The and most expensive colors are blue, red and pink. These colors are very rare. That rarity makes them cost more than white diamonds.
Yellow diamonds can be less or more expensive that white diamonds depending on the intensity of the color. Pale yellow stones are more affordable that strong intensely colored yellows. Black and brown diamonds are often much more affordable than white. Browns come in a variety of shades bearing descriptive names such as chocolate, cognac and truffle.

Is It Right For You?

Colored diamond rings have their place almost everywhere in the world, but the question remains: Is it right for you and your loved one? No one but you can answer that question. Consider who the ring is for, and you may have a better idea of what they’ll like. If she prefers traditional ensembles and jewelry, she may not want colored diamonds. If she enjoys being different and rocking out to their own unique style, then colored diamonds may be perfect for her.
