Regular Upkeep Tips for Your HVAC Unit

by | Feb 16, 2018 | Software

Not every problem with your HVAC unit needs a repairman to come and fix it. While larger problems definitely need a professional to handle it, there are smaller methods of upkeep that everyone should perform on their HVAC in order to ensure a long lifespan. You don’t need advanced HVAC maintenance software, you just need some tools to perform the following basic steps.

#1. Change out the filter
If you have an HVAC unit, you should already have been doing this. Changing out the filter goes a long way to keeping allergens out of your home, and having cleaner, crisper air flow out of the vents. Not only is this a healthy thing for you to do personally, it also makes it less likely for your unit to get clogged up by dust.

#2. Schedule routine maintenance
Find an HVAC repair service (preferably one that uses HVACBizPro) that fits your needs and preferences, and have them come by once every season and perform routine maintenance on the unit. Having a professional give it the once over will go a long way to ensuring that the HVAC doesn’t suffer any unforeseen problems in the future.

#3. Regularly clean the outdoor units
Even something as simple as just hosing down the outside units will keep it from becoming overly dirty. In particular, the coils of the unit should be regularly cleaned. If it gets too dirty, you’ll need to hire a professional to come by and give it a look. While you could have them clean it during their routine maintenance, some repair services will charge extra for that, so it’s not recommended.

#4. Clean the drain line
Drain lines are obviously going to pick up a lot of gunk, as that is their purpose. However, this can easily lead to them getting clogged up, so you should be on the lookout. The best way to handle this when it happens is to pour bleach down the drain line. The problem will sort itself out from there.

Should you shut out a professional HVAC repair service completely? Of course not. When your HVAC unit breaks down, it’s going to take a professional team to get it up and running again. But there are smaller things, little acts of upkeep that you should regularly be doing when you own an HVAC unit. Leave the maintenance to the professionals, but it’s your unit, so it’s up to you to make sure it runs at peak efficiency every day in between.
