Tips For Extending The Life Of A Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

by | Apr 24, 2017 | Machining Manufacturer

A single acting hydraulic cylinder is a fairly simple system that requires basic maintenance to maximize its life cycle and to reduce the risk of sudden failure or poor performance.

The structure of the single acting system reduces the number of hoses and connectors, which means maintenance and routine checks a bit easier. However, it is important not to simply let these routine inspections and checks pass, take the few minutes to inspect the cylinder on a regular basis to spot any potential issues before they result in more costly damage.

Check the Oil

It is important to use the right hydraulic oil with any single acting hydraulic cylinder. Different combinations of additives in these oils will allow for optimal operation of the cylinder over a range of different environmental and working conditions.

Remember, if a hose breaks or if there is old oil in the system, it is very likely that dirt is also in the system. Change the oil as needed and make sure to use filters to keep the oil clean.

Replace Seals and Check the Full Cylinder

Depending on the hours of use and the manufacturer’s recommendation, take the time to remove the single acting hydraulic cylinder and take it apart on a schedule. This will allow you to check the condition of the cylinder rod to look for pitting or uneven wear.

Pay attention to any signs of corrosion on the interior components as this may indicate there is water getting into the hydraulic oil or entering the cylinder from the outside of the cylinder.

Change the seals on a regular basis and check the bearings and all connectors. It is also important to take the time to visually inspect the cylinder after use on a daily basis to check for signs of leaks, cracks or other types of damage.
