Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Flat Roof

by | Sep 3, 2014 | Roofing

A Flat Roof has several advantages as well as some disadvantages. It depends on where you live and the local climate. Cold, wet weather with lots of snow is not ideal for flat roofs, as the snow accumulation can be dangerous for the roof unless the weight of the snow has also been taken into account during construction. The need for further strengthening is a must in order to avoid any roof cave-ins.

By having a flat roof, buildings will instantly receive a lot of extra space a normal home would not have. This can be used as lounging space to relax and it is especially nice as a break area where employees can take short breaks from work. Flat roofs can also be used as a terrace garden. A water resistant layer is added on top of the roof to keep moisture from building up and damaging the roof. In addition, a container space is built around the edges of the roof garden to prevent water from seeping into the ceiling.

Flat roofs are great in regions with dry conditions, and they are built with a slight slope so rainwater can runoff easily. Runoff water can also be collected in large underground tanks for subsequent use for gardening and in areas where water is scarce. This is a great way to make use of a scarce resource. The Flat Roof can also be used for placing heating and cooling equipment that would otherwise have to be installed on the ground, taking up costly land area.

On the other hand, the construction is prone to leaking. Being flat, roofs easily collect water in depressions, even when constructed with a slight slope. The flat surface is also not suited for colder climates where there is much snow. The snow accumulates and if it is not quickly removed, the huge load on the roof can cause its collapse. Another advantage of the flat roof is that easy access to the roof area is allowed. Sloped roofs are dangerous, especially in adverse weather conditions. Just because you can go out without fear on a flat surface and detect problems easily doesn’t mean accidents can’t happen.
