What Is Involved In Repairing Your Furnace?

If your furnace goes out when cold weather hits, it can cause stress and tension for you and your family. Learn what is involved in repairing your furnace below.

First Step in Repairing Your Furnace: Checking the Thermostat

Repairing your furnace in Asheville, NC, and elsewhere involves important steps taken by an experienced HVAC company. They will usually check the thermostat first to ensure that it is working properly, as this should tell the furnace to turn on when it reaches a specific set temperature. This not only includes checking to make sure all dials, switches, and programmable options are done correctly, but ensuring that all of the thermostat wires running back to the furnace have no breaks in them. Any battery within the thermostat is also checked, and any dust and debris is removed from the thermostat itself.

Circuit Breaker or Fuse

The next step many HVAC companies will take is checking the circuit breaker or fuse for the furnace. In some cases, this breaker was tripped or the fuse was burned out; once the furnace is turned back on or the fuse is replaced, the furnace will start running again.

Furnace Filter

A quality HVAC company will then often check the furnace filter to ensure it is not clogged. Dirt and dust within the filter will restrict the airflow; if there is too much dust and debris within that filter, it could cause the heat exchange to overheat, which will lead to the furnace shutting off quicker than it should. Heavy dirt and debris can also build up on the heat exchanger, which can lead to the shortening of its life and less efficiency from your furnace.
