Preparing Your Cup
When learning how to use a period cup, make sure to clean your hands well. Most menstrual cups are made of silicone or rubber and may not come sterilized, so it’s important to boil them in water for a few minutes before the first use. It is recommended to keep doing so after every use to avoid any chance of infection. Once sterilized, you can fold and insert it like you would with a tampon.
Finding the Right Fold
Many menstrual cups come with instructions on how to fold them. There are many different types of folds, from the C fold to the punch-down fold, so you will need to experiment to figure out which fold works best for your anatomy. A popular fold is the C fold which is made by pressing the sides of the cup together and then folding it in half to create a ‘C’ shape to make it easier to insert.
Inserting and Removing

You use your fingers to push it in until it feels comfortable but be aware that you need to get the cup past your pubic bone before letting it open. If it doesn’t open, twist it or try reinserting it. When removing, relax, bear down, and use your muscles to push it out. Gently pinch the base of the cup to break the seal before pulling it out.
