Empowering Women in India: A Journey of Progress and Challenges

by | Nov 22, 2023 | Charitable Trust

Women empowerment is a trending topic we often see people discussing online and on media. It’s true that women now are in a much better place with equal gender status than before. However, women from different domains and parts of society are still becoming victims of gender inequality.

Not only remote areas but even cities like Delhi and Bangalore often see cases of women facing discrimination in workplaces. All these make it clear: women’s empowerment in India is still a mirage as some challenges still need to be addressed from the grassroots.

Given this, our government is already two steps ahead. It has an arsenal full of proactive measures to empower women in every corner of the nation. Let’s have a look at some of the initiatives that have had a substantial impact on the cause –

Economic Empowerment

Initiatives like the National Rural Livelihood Mission and Self-Help Groups have played a pivotal role in economically uplifting women. These programs provide financial support, skills training, and opportunities for entrepreneurship, fostering economic independence among women across rural and urban areas.

Educational Empowerment

Access to education has been a crucial step in empowering women. Schemes like the Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao campaigns aim to enhance girls’ access to education and bridge the gender gap in literacy rates. Though progress has been made, barriers like societal norms, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure still impede widespread educational empowerment.

Empowering Politically

It is notable that women’s participation in politics has been on the rise. Women’s reservations in local government organisations, including Panchayati Raj institutions, have changed the game by enabling them to actively participate in grassroots decision-making.

Nonetheless, obstacles persist due to patriarchal standards, gender-based violence, restricted resource availability, and discrimination in its diverse manifestations. Even with laws protecting women’s rights, there are still issues with their effective application.

While there have been commendable strides made in women’s empowerment India, the journey is ongoing. Several charitable organisations take substantial measures to support women’s empowerment in India. If you ever come across one, make sure to do your bit.
