Don’t Make These Mistakes When Changing An AR 15 Gas Block

One of the easiest and lowest cost options to customize an AR 15 is to change out the standard gas block for an aftermarket option. These AR 15 gas blocks come in different styles and options, so be sure to shop around and find one that suits the look and functionality you are trying to achieve.

The good news is that this is a simple customization option. You will typically not need any special tools other than a hex wrench. By changing out the standard AR 15 gas blocks you will be able to add different custom features to the weapon, allowing for greater flexibility in optics as well as other accessories.

Avoid Using Tools Directly on the Weapon

There are several components that will need to be removed to make changing the gas block much easier. Remove the upper receiver, which will allow you to work with the weapon without problems with correct positioning.

Next, you will need to remove the muzzle brake to get to the front sight base. It is important to avoid damaging the gun when holding barrel while you use a wrench to remove the end. When placing the gun in a vice or when using vice grips to hold the barrel, be sure to use some type of protective padding to avoid scratching the surface.

Don’t Lose the Small Parts

There will be at least one washer you will have to keep track of, as well as the screws to install the new gas block. It is a good idea to have a small container or tin pie plate handy to place all parts in for easy storage.

Remember, when replacing AR 15 gas blocks, take the time to thoroughly clean the weapon. A bit of effort in ensuring all built up dirt and debris is removed and taking to the time to ensure everything is correctly aligned will protect your weapon and make the new installation easier.
