Five Reasons Not To Skip Your Pet’s Annual Vet Visit

by | Aug 24, 2015 | Animal

You might feel like an annual visit to the veterinarian isn’t always worth the time and cost, but there are few things more important than preventative care when it comes to your beloved pet. Here are five important reasons to make—and keep—that appointment!

1. Pets Age Faster

Have you ever heard the saying that one year in a dog’s life is equal to seven human years? Regardless of specific numbers, it’s true that most pets age significantly faster than their humans. Therefore, your pet missing a visit to the vet is pretty much the equivalent of a human missing several years worth of checkups at the doctor. Take a second to think about all the things your doctor checks at your annual physical. It’s exactly the same for your pet, and just as important to make sure that everything’s in tip-top shape.

2. Keeping Weight In Check

It’s important that your pet maintain a healthy weight, and only your veterinarian can tell you what’s best for your pet in terms of diet and nutrition. Obesity in pets can lead to various health problems, so it’s best to catch weight problems early and follow a weight management and exercise plan if necessary.

3. Pets Need Dental Care, Too!

Your veterinarian can take a look at your pet’s pearly whites and determine whether or not they’re developing any issues with their teeth and gums. Preventative care is key, here, as gum disease and tooth decay can cause serious problems later on. Your vet can also let you know if your pet requires day-to-day dental care like brushing. If you do have to brush your pet’s teeth, your vet can instruct you on proper techniques to avoid excessive stress or discomfort in your pet.

4. Vaccination Boosters

There are some vaccines, like rabies, that your pet may need annual boosters for. By putting off the booster shots, you may lower the effectiveness of the vaccines, and thus cause a risk to your pet’s health. Vaccines are especially important if you take your pet outdoors.

5. Important Tests

Your veterinarian will also administer a heartworm test and a fecal test at your pet’s annual exam. These tests are the only way to find out if your pet is playing host to potentially life-threatening parasites. Don’t assume that these conditions couldn’t possibly befall your pet.

Annual vet visits are an essential part of your pet’s long, healthy, happy life. At Ark Pet Hospital, they’re also an opportunity for your veterinarian to build a caring, long lasting relationship with you and your pet. Don’t underestimate the importance of an annual checkup—your pet will thank you for it!
