The first step in becoming a personal trainer is to get certified. There are many accredited agencies that offer programs for a general certification or certifications in specialized areas for personal training. Most courses have a prerequisite. Every student must be at least 18 years of age, know and be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).

Personal trainer classes in NYC can include corrective exercise training to teach you how to work with clients who have common injuries such as low back pain, ACL tears, shoulder pain and other common injuries. Sports performance training provides the skills and education to work with athletes who require a higher level of expectations.

In addition to general personal training classes, students can specialize in women’s fitness, weight loss, fitness nutrition, behavior change, performance enhancement, group personal training, youth exercise, golf fitness, and senior fitness.

A comprehensive exam is required for certification after completing all the required personal trainer classes in NYC. Exams are proctored at a certified testing facility. There are approximately 120 questions with 20 questions that require research. Students have two hours to complete the exam with a score of 70% or better.

Once you have passed the exam, an official certificate will be mailed to you within 4 to 6 weeks.
