When you smile are you happy with what you see? If you are considering changing the appearance of your smile there are a number of important factors that need to be taken into account when choosing a cosmetic dentist. Most people who wish cosmetic dentistry will first speak to their regular dentist.
Although your regular dentist may not perform cosmetic dental procedures, he or she knows better than anyone if you need any further dental work. Your regular dentist will know if your bite for example needs further evaluation he or she will normally arrange for you to see an orthodontist or maxillofacial surgeon. The overall health and condition of your teeth is extremely important for the longevity of any cosmetic procedures that you may be planning to undertake.
If your teeth are in excellent condition and do not require any further work, ask your general dentist if he or she can point you in the direction of an outstanding cosmetic dentist. Although your general dentist is an ideal person to ask for a referral, it never hurts to ask other people that you know that have had cosmetic dental work done. Getting referrals from professionals as well as past patients is a great way to ensure that you end up choosing the best cosmetic dentist available in the community.
Narrowing down your choices:
You will invariably end up with multiple referrals, to ensure you make the right choice you should spend some time investigating the experience of the candidates. Ask the cosmetic dentist if he is skilled at full mouth reconstruction. This is important as there are dentists that are not and will refer a patient to another dentist in the event such a treatment becomes necessary.
There are other important factors for choosing a cosmetic dentist; a few things that are important are:
- Do you like what you see in the dentists “before and after” portfolio of past patients?
- What technologies does the dentist employ? Does the dentist employ the most modern equipment and techniques?
- What does the dentist offer patients in the way of comfort during the procedures that will make the experience relaxing and free of any anxiety?
During your first consultation with the cosmetic dentist you will get a chance to discuss the things that you like as well as dislike about your smile. While you are in the office you can get a feel for the dentist as well as the staff. Cosmetic dental procedures can take time so the dentist’s chair-side manner and the friendliness of the staff are all quite important.
