If you own a boat and are looking for a high quality yard trailer to keep it rolling safely, then you may want to begin your search with yard trailers. Most yard trailers are designed for shoal draft sailboats and powerboats that go up to 44 feet in length. It may take some time to find one to accommodate the size of your sailboat, but yard trailers typically hold up to 40,000 pounds of weight, so there are a lot of them to choose from. So what is it that you should be looking for in a yard trailer?
Stay away from woods and composites
Trailers that are constructed with materials that are resistant to weather may be easy to clean, but there are specific composites that are much stronger than the others, so they may crack if they are hauling a heavy load. Wooden trailers typically have the strength necessary but are not easy to maintain. They tend to look very nice but over time, the beauty will fade and it will need to be replaced. Sometimes the promises given by sales people are too good to be true.
Galvanized Steel Construction
If you are cutting out trailers made up of wood and composite, then that really only leaves metal, preferably steel. It is important not to simply assume that all steel trailers are created equally. Some of them are constructed of sheet metal that is painted, which has the tendency to rust and dent. If at all possible, you should be on the market for a galvanized steel construction as it is resistant to damage and pretty easy to maintain. This keeps away the rust and keeps your trailer looking nice for quite some time.
Make Upgrades
If you are on a tight budget when shopping for your trailer, you can always add hydraulics or lifts to it later on. However, if you know that you are going to need a large trailer for your oversized sailboat, it is best to go ahead and invest in it as soon as possible. Typically, the lower in price means the lower in quality. This could mean that your trailer will become damaged in a matter of months.
