Dual friction clutches are designed for high performance vehicles that are driven on the street. Conventional clutches which use organic material for the clutch disc operate smoothly and last for a considerable time, these discs cannot tolerate the extreme heat that is generated from performance vehicles, plus, performance clutches need more clamping force so the entire assembly is usually fitted with heavier clutch springs.
Why use a performance clutch?
High temperatures: When the engine power is such that the clutch is subjected to extremely high temperatures, temperatures far in excess of what a standard clutch can tolerate, there is no other solution than to install a performance clutch. A dual friction clutch disc is perhaps the ultimate disc for street use. On one side of the disc the lining is non-asbestos, on the flywheel side the disc uses a series of “pucks” which are bonded to a material known for its excellent heat transfer properties.
The “pucks,” when first engaged, slip slightly; the objective is to reduce induced shock and strain which could be detrimental to the drive train. Recovery is instant once the clutch is fully engaged.
The dual friction concept allows for the use of a lighter pressure plate which means there is less pedal pressure. A vehicle fitted with a dual friction clutch is equally at home on the street as it is on the drag strip.
Upgrading:
Like the majority of modifications that are performed on factory automobiles, upgrading the clutch is quite application specific. Dual friction clutches definitely transmit power better; the y also may make gear engagement somewhat more difficult. Organic materials are great for smooth clutch engagement but there use at the track is limited. When a car is used for racing the clutch needs to perform quickly during vehicle launch.
