Aligning Teeth With Braces

It is estimated that at any one time in the US there are at least four or five million people wearing braces to straighten their teeth. There are a couple of good reasons why some people have perfect teeth and others don’t. In many cases crooked teeth or a bite issue is hereditary, there are also environmental factors such a thumb sucking as a youngster.

Types of braces:

Anyone that wore braces in Hinsdale 30 or 40 years ago was faced with wearing metal pads that were attached to the front of the teeth using a form of adhesive. The brackets were attached with elastic bands to an arch wire, the wire acted as a guide for the teeth as they were “muscled” into their new position. The wires started out quite small in diameter and as the teeth began moving, the wire became heavier and stronger. Over a two or three-year period the process was completed and the patient had beautifully straight teeth.

The same basic process is very common today but the brackets are smaller and are often made from clear or tooth colored ceramic or composite material. There are also lingual braces, these are placed on the backside of the tooth rather than the front; they are often the choice of those people that are in the public eye.

A relatively new solution is invisible plastic aligners. This involves the use of a series of aligners that are changed periodically over time. The aligners slowly move the teeth towards their desired position. Many people favor this approach as they are next to invisible, can be taken our easily when eating or cleaning the teeth.

After the braces are removed:

When the time comes for your braces in Hinsdale to come off it is important that you wear a retainer during the night. The retainer usually is worn for upwards of a year and simply ensures that the jaw bone stabilizes.
