The importance of employing both active and passive fire protection

New building projects today are being designed to include efficient passive and active fire protection systems. Many companies are involved in fire protection services in NJ, services and systems that detect, contain, control and extinguish fires in their early stages.

Two types of fire protection:

When one differentiates between the two different types of fire protection services in NJ there must be an understanding of the purpose of passive fire protection and active fire protection.

Passive fire protection:

Passive is the use of barriers that are an integral part of the building, the purpose of these barriers is to contain a fire in a specific area and slow its spread. Passive components are such things as fire resistant walls and floors as well as fire doors that automatically activate. Passive protection extends to the load bearing structure as well in an effort to prevent a building collapse.

The term “passive” in this context simply means that the protection does not require any human or electronic intervention.

Active fire protection:

Active fire protection requires some motion and response. The first stage is to detect the presence of fire; this is accomplished through the use of equipment that locates the source of heat, smoke or flames. In the event of a fire, alarms are activated and the fire department is notified.

At the same time, ceiling mounted sprinklers will be activated, this happens when heat from the fire reaches a temperature which causes the glass bulb in the system to break, when this happens water is released from the sprinkler head. This method of fire protection services in NJ only releases water in the area of the fire thus preventing unnecessary damage throughout the building.
